Rhinebeck – James J. Cody, 90, a resident of Rhinebeck, passed away at his home on March 29, 2024.
Born in Yonkers on June 8, 1933, he was the son of the late John J. and Alice (Duffy) Cody.
After graduating high school, James honorably served in the US Navy from 1952-1956.
Upon his return from the Navy, James attended trade school where he learned construction. He worked for several different companies until he started his own in LaGrange, NY, known as Cody Construction.
James met Joan Cody and they were married shortly after. They moved up from Yonkers with their 3 children in 1969 to LaGrange, N.Y., giving up their boat. After retiring, they moved to Maui for several years with family before returning to NY.
James was an avid swimmer. He was part of the Bard Swim Team for many years where he gave swimming lessons to young children and where he also took several adult education classes. He loved kayaking and being on the majestic Hudson River. He was a very talented writer and enjoyed being a member of a writers group in Pine Plains. He was loved by many as he was always willing to listen and help others. Jay was a loyal husband and a solid family man. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife, James was survived by his children Sharon Cody, Brian Cody, and Sheila Cody and his grandchildren Elena, Zachariah, Grace, and James Jr.
Memorial Hours will be held at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck, on Friday April 5 from 4PM to 7PM. Military honors and a time of sharing will begin at 6:30 PM.
