Evelyn Claus Obituary

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Evelyn Claus (née Martin), age 89, on Monday, December 22. Evelyn, a resident of Calabash, North Carolina, passed away suddenly yet peacefully in the home of her loving daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Michael Tremper, in Rhinebeck, New York.

Born on November 19, 1936, in Poughkeepsie, New York, Evelyn was the daughter of Paul and Gertrude Martin. She was predeceased by her beloved best friend and long-time partner, Joseph Berretta.

Evelyn was affectionately known as Grandma Evie to her grandchildren—Matthew Tremper (Elizabeth) of Orange, Connecticut; Ryan Tremper (Nicole Tolli) of LaGrange, New York; and Kaitlyn O’Halloran (Daniel) of Cortlandt Manor, New York—and Gigi to her great-grandchildren Violet (9), Matthew (7), Evan (5), and Owen (1½). Time spent together in Rhinebeck for Thanksgiving and Christmas, or celebrating the Fourth of July at Lake Sacandaga, were among the greatest joys of her life. Evelyn also shared a special bond with her grand-dog and many cherished great-granddogs.

Evelyn proudly spoke of her long and successful career at IBM, where she formed lifelong friendships that she maintained throughout her life. A devoted sports fan, she passionately supported her local college teams, especially the Marist Red Foxes, Army football at West Point, and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. A diehard New York Mets and New York Giants fan, Evelyn could recite roster moves, analyze coaching decisions, and break down every play. Whether enjoying a beer in the Giants Stadium parking lot or shucking peanuts at Citi Field, she created countless happy memories with her family through her love of sports.

Evelyn and Joe spent their golden years together in Brunswick Plantation in Calabash, North Carolina, where they enjoyed an active social life filled with golf, travel, and cruises. After Joe’s passing in 2016, Evelyn continued to live a full and independent life as a member of her social club including golfing and parlour games. She also tended her garden in the cool morning hours, participated in a book club, and watched baseball, football, or basketball.

Evelyn’s family held a private memorial service in Rhinebeck. In lieu of flowers or cards, those wishing to honor her memory are invited to make a donation to the SPCA or a local animal shelter.
