Gertrude Locher

Gertrude Locher, 96, of Rhinebeck, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2017 after a brief stay at Ferncliff Nursing Home.

Born on August 17, 1920 in Germany, she was the daughter of the late Anton and Victoria (Braun) Locher.

Gertrude attended school in Germany before coming to the States and becoming a Registered Nurse. She worked for 30 years in the Orthopedic Unit at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC until her retirement in 1980. She then decided to resume her nursing career at Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck until 1987.

A long standing Rhinebeck resident, she was an active member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, the Women's Society at Good Shepherd, and the Rhinebeck Garden Club. Gertrude was an avid gardener, incredibly generous with her gardening talents and materials; sharing beautiful flowers and plants, many of which continue to thrive and bloom, beautifying the gardens of many. She was deeply spiritual, sharing her faith humbly; voraciously hand making rosaries for under-served countries around the world which she did well into her 90's. She was incredibly talented in needle point and knitting; her artistic handiwork lives on in the beautiful sweaters, vests, and socks she made for all she loved. Her talents were as endless as the love she showed to all around her. She made everyone in her life feel special and loved. She put everything into life, a motto she lived by and shared with others.

Gertrude is survived by her loving family, Alfred Scholldorf and wife Joanne, Bently Scholldorf, Julia (Scholldorf) and husband Paul Staub, Anita (Scholldorf) and husband Jeff Pendleton and her God daughter Christa (Scholldorf) and husband DJ Hines, and 9 loving great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by many family and friends from Rhinebeck and Germany.

Visitation will be held at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck, on Tuesday , February 21 from 4 to 7 PM.

Mass will be celebrated at the Good Shepherd Church on Wednesday the 22 at 1 PM. Burial will follow in the Rhinebeck Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in honor of Gertrude can be made to the Good Shepherd Church or the Archcare at Ferncliff Nursing Home.
